Every Outer Banks trip has one morning where the rain sets in and the beach is off. Everyone has the same idea at the same time, and they all drive to Manteo.

That is worth knowing before you go, because the aquarium now runs on timed entry, and the slots on a wet morning go early. Book from the house before you have decided anything else about the day.

This is a mid-sized regional aquarium, not a city-scale one. Two to three hours is a full visit. Arrive expecting to fill a whole day and you will be disappointed. The big tank is the reason to come

The centrepiece is a large ocean tank with sharks in it, lit blue and deep enough that the fish pass well above your head. Children stand at that glass far longer than at anything else in the building, and adults do too.

Go there first. It is the busiest spot in the aquarium and it thins out noticeably in the last hour before closing.

The otters earn their billing

River otters are the other thing people remember, and the aquarium runs an otter enrichment session as one of its free daily programmes. That is the one worth timing your visit around, because otters asleep behind a rock are a very different experience from otters being given something to solve.

Ask at the ticket window for the day's programme times when you arrive. They are included with admission and they are the difference between a good visit and a walk past some glass.

The freshwater tanks are quietly the best part

The coastal North Carolina habitats get less attention than the sharks and deserve more. Yellow-bellied sliders, painted turtles and the rest of the blackwater and estuary species are the animals actually living in the water your rental backs onto, which makes them more interesting than they sound.

If your group splits, this is the calm end of the building.

The sea turtle hospital is the part worth explaining to children

The Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation Center, the STAR Center, is a working rehabilitation facility rather than an exhibit. Turtles come in cold stunned, injured by boats or tangled in gear, and the ones you see are patients that will be released.

It keeps shorter hours than the rest of the building, 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., so do not leave it until last. This is the part of the visit that sticks with kids, and it makes the point about fishing line and plastic better than any sign does.
